The History of Izu Nagaoka Onsen Spa

Izu Nagaoka Onsen Spa is located in Izu-no-kuni city in the Shizuoka Prefecture.
It is just 90 minutes away from Tokyo by Shinkansen (Super train) and JR line.

There are two spas in the both side of the Mt. Genji that is placed in the center of this area; one is older and is called “Kona Onsen Spa” in the East side of the mountain.
It is said that that Minamoto-no-Yoritomo, such as the founder and the first shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate of Japan in the 12th century, visited the “Kona Onsen Spa”.
The other one is called “Nagaoka Onsen Spa” in the West side of the mountain and was found in 1903.

The name of the “Nagaoka” is based on the legend in the Heian era (794-1185).
The courtier (Miyahito) who was exiled to Izu city in the Heian era named the “Nagaoka”, because he was impressed by the landscape of “Nagaoka” that reminded him the “Nagaoka” in Kyoto city.

The “Kona Onsen Spa” was opened around 1,300 years ago.
About the story of “Kona” district was also written in the history book “Azuma Mirror (Azuma Kagami)” in the Kamakura era (1185 -1333).

The well-known spa, The Izu Nagaoka Onsen Spa has been popular in Japan for a long time

There are many free footbaths in the area of Izu Nagaoka Onsen Spa.
Because taking a footbath is simple and easy, it became popular to the tourist.
For specially the tourists who don’t stay over a night, in addition to the footbath, it is also possible to use only the Spa at the public bathing place “Ayame no yu” and at other several inns.
