The Yagurasawa Road
This road through the Ashigara Pass has served to connect west and east since ancient times and has long been maintained by the government.
In the Edo period it was an offshoot of the main Tokaido road connecting Kyoto to the city of Edo, as Tokyo was then called.
It ran from Edo’s Akasaka Mikado, passing through towns including Atsugi, Hadano and Matsuda.
Its main role was to serve as the route for transporting goods over the Ashigara Pass.
Since the middle of the Edo period, which lasted from 1603 to 1868, it has been a holy route for those making pilgrimages to Mount Fuji and has also been called Fuji-do (Fuji-Michi.)
