Shimoda Park

The “Shimoda Park” is on a small hill overlooking the Shimoda harbor, and you can enjoy different views of the harbor from three observation decks, which are called “Babagasaki”, “Ochagasaki” and “Shidagaura”.
In the park, you can see the monuments of two figures and their inscriptions that were built to commemorate the opening of Japan for trade.
One is a monument of Matthew Perry, Commander of the US Navy, who arrived in Japan with fleets to request negotiations for opening the country to trade in the Edo period (1603-1867), when Japan was still under a national isolation policy.
The other is a monument of Townsend Harris who negotiated the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between the United States and the Empire of Japan as a diplomat before actively working as the first Consul General in Japan.
On the vast 330,000 square-meter properties, flowers, including azaleas, hydrangeas and camellias, are in full bloom depending on the season, which allows visitors to fully enjoy the seasonal beauty of nature.
