Hosono Kogen

Hosono kogen is wide grassland of Japanese pampas grass in the Misujiyama Mountain.

The area is 821 meters from Inatori Higashi izu town that is the altitude of 400 meters.
The area is about 125 hectares and it is seven times bigger than “Hakone Sengokuhara (Kanagawa prefecture)” which is famous as Japanese pampas grass.

In spring, you can enjoy collecting of bracken (Warabi) and osmund (Zenmai) in a nature.
In the autumn, you can look the great panoramic view of the golden shiny pampas grass field with the Pacific Ocean and Izu Oshima.

Hosono kogen is also famous as a paragliding Mecca.
There is a paragliding tandem flight class to fly with an experienced instructor and so that even the beginners can fly safely.

Places to visit in Hosono Kogen

Hosono kogen is a plateau that was created around 200,000 years ago on the old slope of Mount Amagiyama that was erupted.

Some part of the Hosono kogen was covered with sediments of poor drainage and became a marsh.
There are four marshes, such as “Nakayama Marsh No.1”, “Nakayama Marsh No.2”, “Shibahara Marsh” and “Momono Marsh”.
They are designated as a natural monument by Shizuoka prefecture in the walking path in the Hosono kogen.

You are allowed to walk freely in the Hosono kogen area.
However as many precious plants inhabit in the marshes in the area, please stay in the walk path.
At the entrance of the Hosono kogen, there is a sign of walking map with a representative route set.
Please check it before you start, as the distance and the required time are listed.
As a camera stand is available to set up in the stunning spot of the walking path, it is recommended for those who want to take pictures with the camera set up.
