Nakaze Residence
The Nakaze Residence was built in 1887 as a mansion for Naokichi Yoda, who was a wealthy merchant and made a fortune as a kimono wholesaler.
The trade name of Yoda Naokichi’s kimono shop was Nakaze, so it is called “Nakaze-tei (Nakaze Residence)”.
In 1988, Matsuzaki town bought the mansion, consisting of seven buildings including the main building and its storehouses, and the main building is open to the public as a folk museum.
The building was equipped with a variety of luxurious items, including wood, fine sculptures and hardware, and you can imagine the luxurious life of the wealthy merchant at that time.
Especially, the namako-kabe walls with a black plaster finish in the storehouse on the premise of the main building can only be seen here in Matsuzaki-cho.
There is a teahouse and a souvenir shop in the building, and you can watch as craftsmen create plaster paintings.
At the Matsuzaki Visitor Center (there is no entrance fee) just on the right of the entrance of Nakaze Residence, geosites in the Izu peninsula are displayed.
