Columner Joints at Tawaraiso Beach

Pillar-like rocks called “Chujo-setsuri (columnar joints)” are neatly stacked on the coast of the western side of Tsumeki-zaki cape.
The place where the cross sections of the pillars spread out like a terrace is called “Tawara-iso” due to its shape.
In the Edo era, pentagonal stones of about 30cm on each side called “Tawara-ishi” were cut out from here and gained popularity.
People can go down to the shore to see them, but it is recommended to look down on them from the observation deck in the promenade.
