Rakujuen Park

Rakujuen Park

The Rakuju Garden was built as a second villa for Prince Komatsunomiya-Akihito.
The entire garden and buildings stand on the top of the Mishima lava that flowed from Mount Fuji, about ten thousand years ago.
The garden is designated as a national scenic spot in Japan and is owned by Mishima city.
There are also animal Square and Vehicles Square and so the size of the entire garden is about 75,000㎡.
The “Obama pond” is designed in the center of the garden.
The water of Obama pond comes from the snow melting water from Mt.Fuji.
However, in recent Obama pond is often not filled with water.
In spring, you can appreciate the cherry blossoms, in autumn the autumn color and the Kiku flower festival.

Rakujukan Hall

Rakuju Hall was built in 1890 in the raised-floor-style.
Since it was built on top of Mishima lava, the elevation above ground level makes the rooms more interesting.
The Rakuju Hall adopted the noble style of the tea ceremony house. (Kyomafu-takayukashiki-sukiyadukuri)
Many famous traditional artists from the Meiji era created more than 200 art works.
This Hall is integrated with the traditional paintings of the four seasons in Japan.
The garden view from the inside of the hall is quite amazing.
The view of the "Obama pond" and the garden view through the circle window in the tea ceremony room is like a perfect traditional Japanese painting.
The detailed design, the perfectly oriented view, and the arts on show all confirm that the prince had great artistic taste.
As the Prince Komatsunomiya was a member of the imperial family and successor to the throne in Meiji era, he attended the coronation ceremony of Edward VII of on behalf of the emperor and served as an Army general.
In addition, he served as president of the Japanese Red Cross and contributed to its development.
