Katsuragi City, Nara: Fire Safety and Wildfire Prevention Notice (For Hikers)

In winter, weather conditions tend to be dry, and it becomes especially important to exercise heightened caution when handling any source of fire.
Most fires are caused by human factors such as improperly discarded cigarettes and careless handling of open flames. To prevent fires, it is effective to consistently follow basic habits that eliminate potential ignition sources. In addition, if a fire does occur, appropriate measures are necessary to minimize damage.
Once a fire breaks out, it can have a significant impact on people’s lives and the environment, leading to loss of property and, in some cases, endangering human lives. Please take this opportunity to review fire-prevention measures in your daily surroundings, and we appreciate your continued cooperation in reducing the risk of fire.
Forest Fires
Forest fires occur in wooded areas such as mountainous regions. Due to the limitations of firefighting operations in complex terrain and the tendency for fires to spread rapidly under strong winds, it often takes several days to several weeks to extinguish them. Compared to fires on flat land, forest fires require longer response periods and can have a greater social impact. When hiking or taking part in outdoor activities, please take the utmost care when handling fire and help prevent forest fires.
Key Points to Prevent Fires in Forested Areas
- Do not build campfires in areas where dry grass or other materials are likely to catch fire.
- Do not build campfires during strong winds or dry conditions.
- Smoke only in designated areas; make sure cigarette butts are fully extinguished and never litter them.
- Dispose of your trash in designated locations or take it home with you.
- Do not play with matches or lighters.
