To explore the history of the Katsuragi region, we’ve previously focused on the theme of “tracing ancient roads.” This time, our attention turns to the ancient pathways of Katsuragi, particularly the route across the Takenouchi Pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


As you descend the mountain pass and approach the basin’s entrance, you’ll encounter the Takenouchi archaeological site, inhabited since the Jomon period. Evidence indicates active workshops crafting tools from Sanukite during the Jomon and Yayoi periods. Later, in the Kofun period, the site became a stable regional hub for trade and logistics with Kawachi. The enduring historical significance is evident through the tumuli along the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Upon entering the Takenouchi settlement, the road is maintained as the historical national route, the Takenouchi Highway. With minimal traffic, you can reflect on the comings and goings of people during the Edo period, fostering a palpable sense of history. Alongside the road, stories passed down through generations, including those related to Matsuo Basho like “Watayumi Mound,” “Kojo Ima,” and “Tiger Woman of Oiso,” add depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


From Takenouchi, the road continues to Nagao before crossing the basin via the east-west Yoko Oji road, eventually reaching Hatsuse in Sakurai. This route, known as the Hatsuse or Ise Highway, holds rich histories within towns like Takada, Yagi, and Sakurai. People have played a vital role in shaping the region’s history along these roads. Seize the chance to embark on a journey and experience crossing the Takenouchi Pass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
