Enmyoji Temple

Enmyoji Temple

The Enmyoji temple was founded by Niccho Shonin in 1479 as a temple for the Nichiren sect of Buddhism.
The original mountain gate burned down in a big fire that spread in 1878, and it was replaced with the main gate from the Honjin* of Tokaido Mishima-shuku that was the eleventh of the fifty-three stations of the Tokaido Road during Edo period Japan.
There is a tomb in honor of dutiful dogs on the grounds of the shrine.
There is a sad story that tells about a group of dogs, which has been passed down since the Edo period.
According to the story, when the dogs were puppies, they intently took care of their sick mother who lived in the temple, but ultimately the puppies and their mother died together.
Even today, on April 18th every year, a festival is held to pray for the souls of the dogs.

* Honjin: An inn officially designated as a lodging for a feudal loard (Daimyo) in the Edo period. The current mountain gate is designated as a special historic building by Mishima city.
