Old Tokaido Road・Old Hakone Road

The old Hakone Road is part of the Old Tokaido Road that the Tokugawa Shogunate developed as a road running from Edo to Kyoto along the Pacific Ocean at the beginning of the Edo period.
Every 3.6m, stones were laid on the road developed by the government, and the stone paved road was completed in 1960.
Pine and cedar trees are planted on both sides of the road.
In an area about 2 km long from the Yamanaka area to the Sasahara area, the stone roads were repaired to restore a look that is close to the original state.
The old Hakone Kaido was called "Hakone Hachiri", because it was "Hachi-Ri(about 32 km)” long, which started from Mishima-shuku, went up to Hakone-toge pass, and then went down to Odawara-shuku.
The words "Hakone mountain is extremely steep", are lyrics from an old song; as the song suggests, the area was thought to be the first difficult spot to pass on the Old Tokaido Road, and the section from Mishima-shuku, via Hakone-toge pass, to Hakone barrier station (Sekisho) is also referred to as "The West Slope (Nishisaka)".
