Old Township

The three town quarters, Kamimachi (Upper Town) and two Shimomachi (Lower Town), which developed as merchant towns, are collectively called the Old Township and formed the center of a castle town during the Edo period.
The sight of the irrigation canals running under the eaves of the houses and the rows of buildings with their characteristic projecting lattices and kohizashi (small roofs between the first and second floors) makes visitors feel as if they had been transported back in time to the Edo period.
