House of Mishima Lunar Calendar Publisher

House of Mishima Lunar Calendar Publisher

The "House of Mishima Lunar Calendar Publisher" is a small museum that introduces the "Mishima-goyami calendar" that is a Japan's oldest calendar as a printed calendar with kana characters.
It is located 300 m east of the Mishima Taisha Shrine.
The Kawai family had been publishing the Mishima-goyami calendar since the Muromachi period (1336~1573).
As the original building was collapsed by the "Ansei Great Earthquakes*" (1850s), the current building was rebuilt after the earthquake; it was designated as a registered tangible cultural property of Japan in 2006.
Even though the building was renovated, its traditional Japanese architectural style has been kept now.
The woodcuts of Mishima-goyami calendars and the historical materials of Japanese calendars are displayed there.
If you wish to have a replica of Mishima-goyami calendar, we can give you a printed calendar on a Japanese paper that is an actual half size of the real one.

* "Ansei Great Earthquakes" were a series of three major earthquakes that struck Japan during the Ansei period (1854~1860).
