Don’t miss this unique opportunity to delve into the magic of animation!

“Every filmmaker starts off as a spectator.”

As a producer at Studio Ghibli, Toshio Suzuki, along with directors Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki, has brought numerous world-renowned animated films to the public. This exhibition focuses on the post-war era in Nagoya where Suzuki grew up, through the Showa, Heisei, and Reiwa periods, highlighting the many films and books he encountered and the era’s backdrop they reveal. From childhood, through his youth, and into his continuously curious adult life, Suzuki has read comics, novels, history books, non-fiction, and critical essays.

This exhibition explores how these works and their authors influenced him, how he connected their insights to his way of thinking, and how he faced the creators as an editor and producer to establish Studio Ghibli’s films. This is explored through the 8,800 books and roughly 10,000 films that have become a part of Suzuki’s lifeblood. Especially, the space packed with numerous films that he “experienced” during his tumultuous early years is a must-see. The exhibition will also display valuable materials, proposals, and three-dimensional models, among other items.

Toshio Suzuki Profile

Born in 1948 in Nagoya, Suzuki is a producer at Studio Ghibli. After graduating from the Faculty of Letters at Keio University, he joined Tokuma Shoten. He was involved in the launch of “Animage” magazine, serving as deputy editor and editor-in-chief, while also being involved in the production of works by Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki. He participated in the establishment of Studio Ghibli in 1985 and has been dedicated to the studio since 1989, producing nearly all its theatrical works.

Highlights of “Toshio Suzuki and Studio Ghibli Exhibition”

Highlight 1: Toshio Suzuki’s Bookshelf

In the center of this condensed space, as if peering into Suzuki’s mind, No-Face is quietly reading. This room, modeled after Suzuki’s hideaway, “the brick house,” leads to a vast array of collected series and books.
Among the roughly 8,800 books that have shaped Suzuki’s life, some are available for visitors to pick up and browse.
Enjoy them along with comments from Producer Suzuki.

Highlight 2: Toshio Suzuki’s Film Collection

As a popular new exhibit from Fukuoka, about 10,000 films have been gathered for Suzuki’s film corner. His daily morning routine involves sitting on the sofa with a coffee and checking the TV program guide for movies he likes and wants to watch, organized by the director and actor. This collection has been assembled from such curated movies.
Enjoy the collection, offering a glimpse into the history of film, from past masterpieces to hidden gems.

Highlight 3: Experiencing the World of Ghibli

Spaces where you can feel the world of Ghibli movies, including a roughly 3-meter-tall giant Yubaba and Zeniba, where you can draw love and fortune-telling slips from their mouths, and a corner where Totoro and friends welcome you, are scattered throughout.

Event Overview: Toshio Suzuki and Ghibli Exhibition

The “Toshio Suzuki and Studio Ghibli Exhibition,” which has toured seven locations across Japan, will have its first-ever showing in Kanagawa Prefecture.

The venue will be the Yokosuka Museum of Art, selected as one of the “Top 10 Museums with World’s Best Views,” and the exhibition is scheduled to run for a total of 88 days.

In this exhibition, Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki, who has contributed to numerous world-renowned animated films alongside directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, will introduce a wide array of films and books he has encountered from his childhood to the present day.

Additionally, the exhibition meticulously reveals the birth story of Studio Ghibli and the behind-the-scenes of film planning and promotion.

Moreover, within the venue, there will be numerous photo spots, including a giant fortune-telling omikuji featuring Yubaba and Zeniba’s romance, and “hanging characters” featuring famous lines from Ghibli works written by Producer Suzuki.
