Namako-kabe Street

The Namako-kabe streets

The Namako-kabe streets have a townscape setting unique to Matsuzaki.
Among them, the most notable namako-kabe walls can be seen around the house and the thick-plaster storehouse formerly belonging to the Kondo family, who were drug wholesalers, which were built in the late Edo period.

Namako-kabe walls were constructed by placing flat tiles on the wall’s surface and putting a lot of plaster mounds on the joints, which were called “meji”.
It is said they were called Namako walls because the shape of the plaster mounds looked like “sea cucumbers”.
Take a walk through the narrow stone-paved alleys, and enjoy Matsuzaki’s townscape, where the atmosphere of the old days remains.
