Okinoshima Island

Okinoshima Island

Okinoshima Island is about 60km from the Kyushu mainland, and it has been worshiped as the “Dwelling of the Gods Island” since ancient times.
Rare ancient ritual sites still remain on the island.
There was an active trade exchange with East Asian countries in the late 4th to the late 9th centuries, and the sites here show how rituals were conducted for safe voyages.
Okinoshima Island is part of Munakata Taisha Shrine, which enshrines three goddesses in Oshima and the Kyushu mainland.
The sense of awe that people have towards the island has been passed down from generations, along with the island’s taboos and worship traditions.
