Matsuo Basho rode a boat from here, went down the Mogami River, and composed the line, "By gathering the water from the early-summer rains, the Mogami River flows swiftly."
From these facts, the place has been designated a national scenic spot as "Scenery From The Narrow Road to the Deep North."
It is also popular in the autumn as a spot for leaves changing colors.
