Perry Road

Perry Road

The Perry Road is an about 700-meter-long narrow alley with beautiful willow trees and paved stones where Perry, who landed in Japan from Shimoda Port, marched with about 300 of his subordinates.
Perry’s party passed through this alley on the way to Ryosen-ji Temple where he concluded the Shimoda Treaty, which was an incidental agreement for the Amity between the United States of America and the Empire of Japan.
On the small stone pavement that goes along the Hiraname-gawa River, you can enjoy the lovely landscape typically seen in the coastal areas of Izu, including buildings with namako-kabe walls and “Izu stone warehouses”.

Nostalgic Atmosphere

Today, a variety of attractive shops are operated out of these buildings.
For example, there is a restaurant bar located in a building that used to be a shipping agency during the Edo period, and an antique shop found in an old brothel.
In the vicinity of Perry Road you can find many western style houses made of stone and some traditional private houses built during the Meiji and Taisho period, which help create a nostalgic atmosphere.
At night, gaslights are turned on along the river, and the illuminated area gets even more exotic.
Enjoy taking a leisurely stroll while imaging the historical role Shimoda played in the opening of Japan to foreign trade.
