The Jorenji (Great Buddha of Tokyo), Jodo sect temple, founded between 1394 and 1428, is also famous as the temple of Enma.
It was originally located at Itabashi-juku on the Nakasendo highway and was the place of worship for the Tokugawa Generals.
A 13-metre high Amitabha Buddha was erected in 1977 to protect the temple from natural and war disasters.
There is also a collection of stone statues from the former Todo family's Somei residence, including the Demon of Gaman (endurance).
*The 10 Scenic Spots: Itabashi Jukei were selected in 2003 as its most memorable landscapes and scenery.
