Takano Choei Memorial Hall

This is a memorial hall dedicated to Takano Choei, a prominent scholar of Rangaku (western science) during Bakumatsu-period Japan*.
*It refers to the final years of the Edo period(1603-1868) when the Tokugawa shogunate ended.
Various, valuable, historical material is exhibited here, beginning with transcripts and letters handwritten by Choei, which have been designated as Important Cultural Property.
Visitors can learn about Takano Choei’s life in a time in which Japan was stirring to open up to the world.
