Sumo Jinja Shrine

Sumo Jinja Shrine is a shrine sanctifying the place of origin of Sumo wrestling.
It is believed to be the place where, about two thousand years ago, during the reign of Emperor Suinin, two stalwarts Nominosukune and Taimanokehaya performed Japan’s first sumo match in the emperor’s presence.
In the center of the shrine’s precincts, surrounded by four hinoki cypress trees, is the site of an old sumo ring.
