Lake Biwa Canal

The Lake Biwa Canal is a canal carrying water to Kyoto.
It was built during the Meiji period (1868-1912), using the most sophisticated civil engineering technologies of the time.
Visitors can enjoy scenic views along this canal throughout the year, starting with cherry blossoms in spring and red and gold foliage in autumn.
A boat now carries sightseers down the canal after being discontinued for about seventy years.
