Ryoanji Temple

Ryotan-ji is an old Zen temple representing the one-thousand-year history of the Ii family.
It is a temple worshipping Naomasa Ii, a Tokugawa Shitennō, and Naosuke Ii, the chief minister during the last days of the Edo period (1603-1868).
The Ryotan-ji Garden was designed by Enshu Kobori, and it is designated as a National Site of Scenic Beauty.
The “uguisubari” (“nightingale planking”) hallway and the dragon sculpture were works of Jingoro Hidari.
The main hall hides a statue of Akasagarbha Bodhisattva, which is a god believed to grant wisdom.
