Hokoji Temple

Hoko-ji was founded in 1371 by Mumon Gensen, who was a son of Emperor Go-Daigo. It is the main temple of the Hoko-ji sect of the Rinzai school of Buddhism.
On the temple’s precinct are “five-hundred disciples” statues and Shichison-bosatsu-do hall, which is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property.
The Hanzobo main hall, worshipping an avatar god called Hanzobo, who is believed since long ago to grant protection against fire, is a must-see.
