Kawagoe City Museum

Formerly one of the representative castle towns of the Kanto region, Kawagoe developed as a city rooted in historical and cultural traditions. The city retains valuable cultural properties, such as traditional earthen storehouses.
Kawagoe City Museum was built as a facility for collecting, preserving, studying, and exhibiting historical material.
The museum is located where Kawagoe Castle’s second-main building (“ninomaru”) used to stand, and its exterior was inspired by the appearance of a traditional kura-style merchant’s house. Exhibitions Inside the museum provide an overview of the culture and history of Kawagoe, ranging from primeval times to the present, with focus on the Edo (1603-1868) to Meiji (1868-1912) periods when the town flourished as “Koedo” (“small Edo”).
The scale models reproducing the whole city and its streets lined up with kura-style houses is a must-see.
