Showa Town

Kawagoe is famous for its streets lined up with traditional storehouse-style houses, and the City is promoting the revival of a “Showa-period (1926–1989) town,” preserving buildings remaining from the early-Showa period.
Along the town’s streets remain many stores with so-called “signboard architecture” from the early-Showa period.
“Signboard architecture” is a name for a pseudo-Western appearance created by attaching Western-style façades, as though to place a signboard, to buildings facing the street. It was a common method during a time when it was difficult for many storeowners to build entire Western-style buildings.
The shopping district has a variety goods store, a flower shop, a stationery store, and other kinds of stores in addition to food and drink establishments. In addition, many events introducing local gourmet cuisine and programs for children are held here.
