The first Kawazu Zakura Cherry Blossom Tree

The “Kawazu Zakura” is an early-flowering cherry blossom that blooms from the beginning of February to the middle of March. It is a natural hybrid of the “Kanhizakura” and “Oshimazakura” blossoms.
Its blossoms are dark pink and have a one-month flowering period, which is longer than “Somei Yoshino's”.
Mr. Katsumi Iida was living in Tanaka, Kawazu-cho town when he unintentionally found a seedling of a cherry tree, which turned out to be the first “Kawazu zakura” tree, and planted it in his garden around 1955.
In 1966, it started to bloom.
Initially, it was named "Komine Zakura" after Mr. Iida's house, but after it was discovered to be a new species of tree, and because it was found in Kawazu-cho town, it was then named "Kawazu Zakura" in 1974.
The “Kawazu Zakura” was certified as a tree in Kawazu-cho town in April 1975.
There is a “Kawazu Sakura Festival” which is held for one month from February 10 to March 10.
There are rows of cherry blossom trees stretching 4km along the Kawazu River, which starts from the mouth of the river near Kawazu Station.
The trees are illuminated at night.
