A Literature Monument to "The Izu Dancer"

The Literature Monument to "The Izu Dancer" was built next to the Fukuda-ya, a long-established hot spring hotel in Yugano Onsen, which appeared in the novel "The Izu Dancer" written by Yasunari Kawabata (1899–1972) who was the first Japanese author to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1968.

The story is based on the real experiences of Yasunari Kawabata. It is about a young man who traveled to Izu alone as a distraction from his loneliness and depression and developed a little crush on a dancer girl during the course of his trip.
Passages from "The Izu Dancer" are engraved on the stone monument. "The Izu Dancer" Literature Festival is held there every November.
