Former Residence of the Sugiyama Family

The former Sugiyama residence, preserved as one of the representative machiya houses (traditional Japanese wooden townhouses) in Tondabashi temple town, initially prospered as a sake brewery in the Edo period (1603-1868).
The remains of a large merchant house from the mid-Edo period, it is the oldest surviving house, and is designated as an important cultural property of Japan The residence is open to the public.
