The Old Hokuriku Railway Tunnel Group

In 1896, a railway route between Tsuruga and Fukui was opened on the old Hokuriku Railway Line.
Before the opening of the route, 13 tunnels were constructed between Tsuruga and Imajo, between which there lies the Kinome-toge mountain path – the hardest chokepoint on the route. Among them, 11 tunnels remain at present, and the site of the old Hokuriku Railway route can still be used as community roads.
It is possible to go through them by car or on foot. It is recommended to drive through the route. A spectacular scenery overlooking the Sea of Japan and Tsuruga Bay can be enjoyed near Suizu.
※Please check the locations of each tunnel.
