Masugata Spring Water Site

In 848 (Kashō 1), an exquisitely beautiful woman called Tamatsukuri Komachi suffered from a grave illness.
When she prayed to the healing Buddha Bhaisajyaguru in Kokubunji Temple, a child appeared and told her to purify herself with the water of the pond.
It acquired the name Masugata (True Form) from a tale saying that, as soon as Komachi cleansed herself, she recovered from her illness and became as beautiful as she had been before.
The springs below the cliffline, including the Masugata Pond, have been picked out as one of the 100 renowned waters selected by the Ministry of the Environment, as they have been evaluated for their good environment together with the above-mentioned Otaka-no-Michi. In addition, the group has been selected as one of the 57 designated scenic spots and famous spring waters in Tokyo Metropolis.
