Setagaya Magistrate's Residence / Setagaya City Historical Museum

The Setagaya Magistrate's Residence is the government housing of the Oba family which were employed as Edo-period governors of 20 villages in order of succession in Setagaya, which was the territory in Edo of the Ii family in the Hikone Domain.
As this is a building that was originally built as the residence of the Oba family during the middle of the Edo period and is now being used as a government office, it is also known as a valuable place where you can learn a lot about the lifestyle of the upper classes at the time.
As it the only Daikan mansion of the Daimyos in the city, it was designated as the city's historical site in 1952, and was the first residential building to be designated as an important cultural property of the country in 1978.
From the wooden, thatched-roof, one-story house to the 18-tatami-mat room, you can see the magnificence of the time and the prosperity of the Oba family.
It is a spot where you can enjoy a forest bath under the sunlight shining through the trees in the beautiful garden, or get a deeper insight into the history of Setagaya at the Setagaya Ward Folk Museum within the mansion.
