Nagiso Town Museum (Tsumagojuku, Honjin Waki Honjin Okuya, History Museum)

Tsumagojuku Honjin

Honjin (officially appointed inn) was run by the Shimazaki family for generations.
During the 1880s, the building was demolished after the last family head Hirosuke (a real older brother of Shimazaki Toson) moved to Tokyo.
Subsequently, the site of the honjin was used by the Imperial Property Department and the Forest Management Office.
After it was sold to the town, the building was restored to its original state in 1995, based on the floor plan created in the late Edo period (1603-1868).

Waki Honjin Okuya

The trade name of the waki honjin was called “Okuya,” whose business was run by the Hayashi family for generations.
After the lifting of a ban on logging five kinds of woods grown in Kiso, the building was renovated in 1877 using only Japanese cypress and remains intact today.
In 1967, it was open to the public as a core facility of the preservation project of Tsumago-juku and was designated as a national important cultural property in 2001.
An earthen storehouse in the back exhibits abundant folk materials and Shimazaki Toson’s literary materials relating to the waki honjin.
