Heidenji Temple

The temple first opened in 1283 (the 6th year of the Koan era) and is the oldest Zen temple in the Enshu region. The temple is also the Koge-ji of the Tanuma clan.
The main building was reconstructed in 1786 (the 6th year of the Tenmei era) by Okitsugu Tanuma, the Feudal Lord of Sagara. It is an elegant building and has a doorway exclusively built for the Tanuma clan; the city of Makinohara has designated it as a Cultural Asset.
The place also has Warabe-Jizos crafted by Kosaku Sugimura, and a monument inscribed with lyrics by Miura Tamaki, Japan's first internationally renowned opera singer.
