Muroran Public Aquarium

Muroran Public Aquarium opened in 1953 (Showa 28), making it the oldest aquarium in Hokkaido. It was built to promote the Hokkaido fishing industry on the land where the whale butchery was located during the golden era of whaling.
The aquarium in the historic building retains the car window exhibition style that was common at the time of opening with approximately 120 species being bred and exhibited.
Among them, the symbolic skilfish has been exhibited here since 1969 (Showa 44), ahead of other aquariums around the nation.
The seals, sea lions, and penguin shows are especially popular, and there are also paid playground equipment on the premises so that all families can enjoy.
