Mashike Station

The railroad between Rumoi and Mashike opened in 1921, ten years after the opening of the Fukagawa-Rumoi railroad.
Since its opening, the railroad has been an important means of transportation for people and cargo such as herring fishing.
As the first and last station of the line, Mashike Station has been the setting for movies such as "Eki -Station-" and "New Prison Walls of Abashiri: The Vagrant Comes to a Port Town".
On December 5th, 2008, the railroad between Rumoi and Mashike was closed down, much to the regret of many townspeople and railroad fans. Currently, the station building has been restored and maintained as it was when the line first opened, and is used as a center for exchanges.
