Former Merchant Maruichi Honma Residence

The Honma family was founded in 1875 by Taizo Honma, the first generation of the Honma family, who started a kimono business in 1875.
In Mashike town, which was bustling with the herring boom, goods sold like hotcakes. Riding on the wave of time, he developed a wide range of businesses, including rough goods, herring netting, shipping, and sake brewing, and his house was enlarged accordingly.
The sake brewing business continues to this day and is popular as the Kunimare Sake Brewery.
Each roof tile is carved with the family crest, and the walls and gate posts are decorated in a Western-style.
The remaining buildings consist mainly of a kimono store, a residence, a kimono warehouse, a brewing warehouse, and an annex, and were completed in 1902 after more than 20 years of work.
