Ikuno Townscape

The Kuchigandani area has prospered as a silver mining town since ancient times and retains many of the quiet streets, historical heritage, and modern industrial heritage unique to a mining town.
In the Edo period (1603-1868), there was a local government office, and even today there are many old houses lining the streets.
Houses lined with grilled cedar boards on both sides of the alley, plastered mansions, and the old police station, a quasi-Western-style building from the Meiji era, blended in with the surroundings.
The roofs made of red tiles, which were produced until around 1935, are a rare sight in Tajima.
The retaining walls piled with "Karami stone" (hardened mineral waste) and the stone-piled arches of the trolley road are also characteristic features that illustrate the prosperity of the mine.
