Toritaniguchi Burial Mound

This burial mound, built on the tip of a ridge derived eastward of Mt. Nijo, was discovered by chance during construction work in 1983, and was named Toritaniguchi Kofun (burial mound) after the location's name.
Today, it is believed that the tombs of imperial princes are located at the top of Mt. Nijo, but there is also a theory that the Toritaniguchi burial mound is the tomb of Prince Ōtsu, who is mentioned in the Man'yoshu, the oldest existing collection of Japanese poetry in Japan.
