Bunbu School

Literary and Military Arts School was established by Matsushiro Domain to teach academic subjects and martial arts, primarily to children of samurai families.
Construction began in 1852, the complex was completed in 1854, and the school opened in 1855.
Its classrooms and training halls for swordsmanship, jujutsu, archery, and spearmanship show how domain education combined study with physical training.
Apart from the relocated spear-training hall, almost all of the original buildings still stand in their original positions, making this the only domain school complex of its kind preserved in Japan.
Martial arts experiences may be available by advance arrangement.
