Legends state that in the year 809 the monk Koubou Daishi pierced his staff into the ground here, causing a stream of water to well up, which would make this the oldest known hot spring in Niigata Prefecture.
Nowadays the waters that spill out from Kehoji Temple Public Bath are known for their effectiveness at soothing atopic dermatitis and other conditions.
In addition, Gozu Hot Spring Village also contains the 'Deyu Public Bath (Arayu)' at Deyu Onsen, and the 'Public Bath 'Yakushi no Yu' at Murasugi Onsen.
