Aso Jinja Shrine

The Aso Jinja Shrine was founded in 601 and sits on a cliff overlooking the Tama River.
On the site is an 800 to 1,000 year old vertebrate tree.
It is said that it was planted by Fujiwara no Hidesato a court bureaucrat who served the Emperor. He defeated Taira no Masakado a provincial magnate and samurai based in eastern Japan during the Heian period (794–1185) who was notable for leading the first recorded uprising against the central government in Kyoto.
This shrine is also famous for its "bicycle amulets", which have designs of bicycles on them, making it a sacred place for cyclists in and around Tokyo.
