Seigenji Temple

Seigenji is also known as the temple where 22 wooden statues of Buddha are located.
Mokujiki Myoman Shonin, a Buddhist priest made a pilgrimage throughout Japan to carve 1,000 statues of Buddha.
Mokujiki precepts are to abstain from five grains, not eat meat, and instead to eat buckwheat noodles and nuts ground into powder and mixed with water.
Mokujiki Myoman Shonin stayed for about five months and carved 28 wooden Buddhas, of which 22 are still in existence, including the Sixteen Arhats and Sakyamuni.
Many statues feature smiles and mild expressions and hence are called Smiling Buddha (Mishobutsu).
