Kumaya Cave

Kumaya Cave is the southernmost example of the Legend of Amano-Iwato, the story of Japan’s sun goddess, a legend that exists in many places all over Japan.
The cave, which comprises chert, a kind of sedimentary rock from about 200 million years ago, is the result of many many years of erosion by the wind and waves.
Climb the long set of steps and pass through a narrow entrance to find a mysterious, quiet space that is different to the outside.
Kumaya Cave is designated as a Prefectural National Monument.
