赤間神宮

Akama Jingu Shrine is a beautiful historic shrine located along the sea and is brilliantly vermillion in color.
Right in front of the shrine is the sea where the Battle of Dannoura was held.
The Battle of Dannoura was a climactic battle in Japan between very famous samurai families, Genji and Taira.
The shrine enshrines Emperor Antoku, who died in that battle, and the shrine is one of the places Japanese people who are history fans of the “Heike Monogatari”* would want to visit at least once.
The shrine also enshrines the main character of a famous Japanese story, “Hoichi the Earless.”

*The ”Heike Monogatari” is a story written over 700 years ago modeled after the war between Genji and Taira.
