Tokyo University Akamon Gate Shinji-ike Pond (Sanshiro-ike)

Akamon Gate was first established in 1827 by Maeda Nariyasu, the 13th daimyo of the Kaga domain, as a way of welcoming his new bride, Yasu-hime, the daughter of the 11th shogun, Tokugawa Ienari.
"Sanshiro-ike" was originally "Shinji-ike Pond", which as created at the garden during a visit by the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, and then later it got its other name after serving as a setting for Natsume Soseki's famous novel, "Sanshiro".
