Hoshinji Temple

Hoshinji Temple is a Jodo Buddhist temple located directly across from the University of Tokyo's 'Akamon' gate.
Although the date of the temple's construction is unknown, Hoshinji was first registered to its parent temple, Zojoji, in 1596.
The famous writer and the face of the 5,000 yen bill, Ichiyo Higuchi, lived next to Hoshinji from the ages of 4 to 9.
Every year on November 23, an event in memory of Higuchi Ichiyo, who passed away at the age of 24, is held at the temple.
