The museum was built to honor the achievements of Kunio Yanagita, a folklorist born into the Matsuoka family and awarded the Order of Cultural Merit, and his brothers (Kanae, Michiyasu Inoue, Shizuo, and Eikyu) who were active in various fields.
A rich collection of valuable materials is on display.
