Benkei Cape

Benkei Cape is home to a stone statue of Musashibo Benkei, a servant of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a warlord of the Heian period and a younger brother of Minamoto no Yoritomo, the first shogun of the Kamakura Shogunate.
Various legends exist about these individuals all over the country, one of which takes place here, in Suttsu town.

[Yoshitsune and Benke, who fled Oshu (today the four prefectures of Fukushima, Miyagi, Iwate and Aomori, as well as part of Akita prefecture) during their conflict with Yoritomo, went to Ezo (present-day Hokkaido) and stayed here.
Benkei stood at the tip of this cape every day, waiting for his comrades to arrive, but was never able to meet any of them again. It is said that the Ainu people (the indigenous people of Hokkaido) saw the figure of Benkei and eventually came to call this cape "Benkei Cape."]

Visitors to the Benkei Cape, which shows different faces depending on the seasons and time of day, can see the very transparent blue sea, a color called "Kotobuki Blue", spreading out below them.
Benkei Cape is also famous as a spot from which to view superb sunsets.
