Somei Cemetery

Opened in 1874 as Somei Grave, and was transferred to Tokyo in 1889, and was renamed Somei Cemetery in 1935.
In a convenient location only 10 minutes from both Sugamo and Komagome Stations on the JR line, the cemetery serves as not only a place of rest, but also as an important green space within the city, and we have many visitors who pass through on walks.
Additionally, the cemetery is known as the birthplace of the Somei Yoshino cherry trees, and the roughly 100 blooming trees make a beautiful site in spring that attracts many visitors.
Somei Cemetery is also the resting place for a number of famous Japanese authors, such as Kotaro Takamura, Okakura Kakuzo, and Futabatei Shimei.
